Soon after starting our studies of Kosho Ryu Kempo we become aware that one of the representations of the octagon on the crest is the Eightfold path of Buddhism. We can even list the eight elements. But what exactly is "Right Understanding" or "Right Livelihood", or even "Right Speech" for that matter. 'The Beginner's Guide to Walking the Buddha's Eightfold Path' by Jean Smith is an excellent resource for gaining an understanding of the Eightfold Path and how it relates to us in the current world. The book covers the specific teachings of the Buddha, with references, then discusses how those elements might look in practice. It is a very readable book, and one I would
highly recommend to anyone wishing to understand this important aspect of our practice.
